Mother Lode Coffee Roasting Company fans may have noticed a new name around the store shelves, Capt. George’s Blend. Actually a renaming of our Gourmet Blend, it is a medium roasted blend of Central and South American coffees. Full-bodied, aromatic and smooth this coffee is built to please. That said, who is this George guy?
Born in 1826 in Searsport, Maine, George McClure was a deep-water ship captain, just like every other man from his town. Not really, but Searsport put out more ship captains than just about any other town on the New England seacoast. Maine was famous for its large schooners and they played a vital commercial role in the westward expansion at the end of the 19th century.
All of my life I heard of this ancestral legend and often thought of his long forgotten adventures. This was a time prior to the Panama Canal and every voyage between east and west coast was made around Cape Horn, Chile. The Antarctic Seas were treacherous, only the brave set out. Anyone interested in the history of these early times will enjoy this site: http://penobscotmarinemuseum.org/.
I grew up watching my family chug dark black coffee and since my college days have done the same. Mother Lode Coffee Roasting Company has many different coffees to choose from, one will surely suit your fancy. Captain George’s Blend is a great place to start! If you’re really are not sure which coffee to order, give us a call. “We love talkin’ coffee”.
